Clubs and Activities (Due to Covid Pandemic some extra curricular activities may not be offered)

School Play

Our school play is held the week before spring break. Practice and try-outs will be announced in December. Our play is still to be determined!

Builders Club
Builders Club is a service leadership program open to all 6-8th grade students. The students build leadership skills through service to others. Some of our past projects have included a school clean up, selling candy to raise money to adopt a family, food drive, and more. We also hold two social event, a member recognition/officer induction event each year. Officer elections are held in the spring for the following year. As a student led program, the officers run the meetings and all the members serve on a committee. The Downtown Topeka Kiwanis group sponsors the program at French Middle School.

Sum Day
Students in grades 6-8 prepare for a SUMday math competition held at Washburn Rural Middle School in the spring. Schools from all over the city participate and let their math skills shine.

History Day
Students who are history buffs come to research this year's them, "Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History". Students prepare a project, documentary, web page, drama presentation, or a paper for the competition which is the last Saturday in February.

Model UN
Topeka Model United Nations (TMUN) is a two-day event, through elaborate simulation, where delegates represent countries from all over the world, attempting to accurately represent their country's position on various council topics. This educational experience promotes student interest in international relations and related subjects using their research and communication skills. It creates an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends while debating resolutions in an attempt to solve a world problem.

Talent Show
All students have the opportunity to share their talents with the student body. We hold try-outs and provide a fabulous show second semester. The purpose of the try-outs are to ensure that students are prepared to perform in front of an audience and that content is appropriate for the school setting. We are always amazed at how many talented students we have at French Middle School.

Geography Bee
Students in grades 6-8 learn about different cultures, geographical locations, and other worldly places. The school competition is held in January.

Choir
All 6th graders participate in a semester of Choir and perform once each semester in an evening show. Our 7th and 8th graders can join Choir each year for a year long course. They participate in one school performance each semester. Our 7th and 8th grade Choir Instructor is shared with Topeka West High School.

Band
All students are eligible to sign up for band. It is a year long exploratory class. Sixth graders make up one section of band and 7th and 8th graders combine for a second section of band class. Each class participates in one school performance each semester. Our band instructor is shared with Topeka West High School.

Orchestra
All students are eligible to sign up for orchestra. It is a year long exploratory class. Sixth graders make up one section of orchestra and 7th and 8th graders combine for a second section of orchestra class. Each class participates in one school performance each semester. Our orchestra instructor is shared with Topeka West High School.

Spelling Bee
All students can participate in study sessions in an effort to prepare for the District Spelling Bee in February. Past spelling bee lists are used to prepare for the current year.
